This is best told with pictures. Ahem! Tap. Tap (on the computer screen to make sure you are listening). If you would kindly read the captions for each picture and make a dinging sound in your head similar to the turn the page bell that rang when you listened to the books on tape as a child, I would be ever so grateful. After making that sound (remember it’s in your head, but you can make it out loud if you would like…and if you aren’t worried about what people around you may think), you can scroll down to the next picture. Please enjoy this post. And please call me if you ever want to make royal icing snowflakes. Now, let us begin:
Once upon a time, a few days after Christmas, This happened at Sweet Whimsy’s house:
K wanted pearl and silver snowflakes on her cake. These royal icing snowflakes took about 30 hours to complete. They were created, then dried, then hand painted, then CAREFULLY peeled of the wax paper.
Traveling on winter roads can be scary…especially with a wedding cake on board! Thank heavens Mr. Sweet Whimsy is super creative and innovative. He made a special wedding cake travel box to keep this beauty safe over the bumps. Yeah. He is special like that.
Thanks to Mr. Sweet Whimsy, the cake made is safe and sound! Oh…and you can see the perfect cake stand he designed just for this winter wedding table. Isn’t it gorgeous? Who knew a tree trunk could be so wonderfully perfect for a cake platter?
Adding the finishing touches and gluing the snowflakes on had to be done on-site. Armed with royal icing, edible sparkle sprinkles, a Sweet Whimsy apron, Mr. Sweet Whimsy and his camera, and a box of fragile snowflakes packed in a padded box, we set to work. Mr. Sweet Whimsy took pictures while I looked serious and intense. Did I mention that the camera (and cake) add about 30 pounds to the person in the picture? About an hour and roughly 60 snowflakes later, the cake was ready!
Three days of hard work and only a few tears (mostly about the picture of me….do I really pull that face while working? Well yes- says Mr. Sweet Whimsy-I do…..) was totally worth it! This cake looks magical! The custom made little love birds were the perfect topper for this. Oh, and K said that it tasted divine! Who doesn’t love a Devil’s chocolate cake filled with whipped chocolate ganache and frosted buttercream. And I am pretty sure the cold weather froze all the calories, so they didn’t even count!
That concludes our picture story for the day… As you can see, this story demonstrates perfectly that without Mr. Sweet Whimsy, this little venture would not be possible. You should know that in spite of the fact that he claimed I made more wails of protest over the bumps on the road while delivering the cake than I ever did at any of the births of our six lovely children, this was a thoroughly enjoyable adventure for both of us. The fact that he is such a cheerleader and is always willing to assist me in all my crazy ideas (like taking a chainsaw to a massive tree trunk to create a cake stand) and even come up with some of his own (like the awesome cake transport box!) is something that makes me grateful every day . And so, with that, I will close with: And we continue to live happily ever after.
