I can hardly believe that I have a daughter that is nineteen! It hardly seems like yesterday that she was an adorable little toddler pushing her dolls around the house. Now she is all grown up and living away at college. Somewhere along the way, she fell in love with some of the same things that I did when I was the same age. She adores Audrey Hepburn as much as I do. Actually, I think she may adore her more than me. She has quotes by Audrey plastered all over her room (has for years) and a HUGE black and white photo of her as the main decoration in her apartment at school. She always has an Audrey Hepburn calendar and she has a healthy collection of her movies that she has watched over and over.
One of my favorite quotes from Audrey (I like to think if we knew each other, we would be close enough friends to be on a first name basis) is “For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.” This beautifully sums up who my little girl is. Except she is not so little anymore.
But if you are having a hard time accepting that your little girl is all grown up and has been for a few years now…and if you are wishing that time hadn’t flown by so fast and she had stayed little a little longer, then when it is time to make a birthday cake, you do what I do. You refuse to accept that she is too old for a doll cake and make one that honors the icon you both adore. I found a picture of the gorgeous dress Audrey wore in Sabrina and decided to fashion a tribute dress for Ashley’s cake. I think it turned out as beautiful as the two ladies I was honoring with this cake. And if you are wondering what kind of cake I made to go with the dress, I will leave you with this other quote from Audrey. It is now one of my other favorite quotes:
“Let’s face it, a nice creamy chocolate cake does a lot for a lot of people; it does for me.”

I didn’t see this until right now. And it made me smile. Thank you for being the best mother on the whole planet, and for understanding [and supporting!] my every move. I LOVE YOU. 🙂
